Students

The most over-served and under-used group in the region: what a student health service actually covers, and the two administrative traps.

You probably have a service you have not used

Higher education in this region comes with health provision that most students never open. Finland is the clearest case: a national student health service covers higher-education students, funded through a student health-care fee, with mental health as a major part of its work. Elsewhere the arrangement is institutional rather than national — university health services, counselling services, chaplaincies and student union welfare offices — and the quality varies, but almost every institution has something and almost none of it is fully booked in October. It is free or nearly free at the point of use, it is usually faster than the public system, and the single most common reason students do not use it is not knowing it exists.

What it typically covers

Short courses of counselling or structured psychological work, group programmes for anxiety, procrastination and stress, medical appointments including prescriptions where the service employs doctors, assessment and referral onwards, and the practical side — documentation for extensions, deferrals and examination adjustments. That last part is worth naming, because a student who is unwell usually has an academic problem running alongside the health one, and the two are solved in different offices. Ask for both at the same appointment.

The two administrative traps

First, coverage is tied to enrolment status. Taking a leave of absence to recover can remove the very service that was treating you, which is a perverse but real feature of several systems — ask what happens to your access before you formally interrupt your studies. Second, coverage is tied to place: students living away from their registered address often find that the local health service belongs to a registration they never moved, which in Lithuania decides which mental health centre is yours and in Norway which municipality’s services you can use. Both traps are administrative and both are fixable in advance.

Exchange, international and doctoral students

These three groups fall through the gaps most often. Exchange students may be outside the national health-care scheme and reliant on insurance that covers accidents rather than mental health — check what your policy actually covers before you need it, because acute mental-health treatment is a common exclusion. International students face the language problem set out on the language page, with the compensation that university services are usually the most multilingual providers in any city. Doctoral students are frequently employees rather than students, which moves them from student health to occupational health — a better service, usually, but only if they know to use it, as covered on the work page.

What actually helps a struggling student

The clinical part is the same as for anyone else. The specific part is that student life removes the structures that hold mood steady: sleep timing collapses, meals become irregular, days lose their shape and social contact becomes optional. Those are not moral failings and they are unusually responsive to being fixed. Anchor a wake time rather than a bedtime, get daylight early, keep one fixed daily obligation with another human being in it, and separate the academic problem from the health problem so that each goes to the office that can solve it. The chronotype pages explain why the wake anchor works better than a bedtime rule for people whose body clock runs late, which describes most students.

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Is student mental-health support free?

It is free or nearly free at the point of use almost everywhere in this region. In Finland a national student health service covers higher-education students through the student health-care fee; elsewhere universities and student unions run counselling and health services funded institutionally.

Does my access end if I take a leave of absence?

It can, because coverage is usually tied to enrolment status — which means interrupting your studies to recover may remove the service treating you. Ask what happens to your access before formally interrupting, and ask whether transitional arrangements exist.

I am an international student. What covers me?

Check your insurance before you need it, because acute mental-health treatment is a common exclusion in student and travel policies. University health and counselling services are usually the most multilingual providers in a city and are the sensible first door.

I am a doctoral student. Which service is mine?

Often occupational health rather than student health, because doctoral researchers are frequently employees. Occupational health is usually the faster and more comprehensive of the two, and it is free to the employee, but only if you know that it applies to you.
